It doesn’t matter if you own an old Mac or a new one; there will come a time when your computer startup becomes slow, Mac itself starts to underperform, and apps are no longer responding.

Even though Macs are considered fast and long-lasting computers, in the world of technology, there are no miracles, and nothing is permanent. Therefore, it is normal for your Mac to be experiencing technical issues.

    Clean Mac Tips

Thus in today’s article, we want to give you ten tips that will help you speed up the overall performance of your beloved Mac.

    Clean Desktop

The desktop is the first thing you see after you boot your Mac, so why not improve your computer’s performance by cleaning up the desktop?

You must keep a few items on your desktop as possible because to display each thumbnail on your screen, your Mac uses memory resources that slow down the computer.

    Check Storage Space

If you want to improve your Mac’s overall performance, you will likely need to create more free disk space. If you have less than 10% free storage space on your Mac, there is no surprise the computer is underperforming.

To see how much free storage space you have at the moment, click the Apple logo in the left corner of the screen, go to About This Mac, and click on the Storage tab.

However, if you work as a freelance social media manager or as a graphic designer and create a lot of visual content, it’s only natural that your disk is almost full. In that case, you should consider using cloud storage platforms.

    Use App Uninstallers

Start cleaning up your Mac and creating more free disk space by removing apps you no longer need. You would be surprised how much disk space can be taken up by the simplest applications.

The easiest way to remove unnecessary apps is to check the best uninstallers and pick a tool for your Mac. This way, you won’t have to worry about manually deleting the system cache left after removing the apps.

Remove Files From the Downloads Folder

Moving forward, another spot on your Mac that may contain large unneeded files is the Downloads folder. The folder stores all of the files you download from the internet.

These files could be anything: installation files, PDF books, flyers, media files, and whatnot. Take time to review the folder and remove unnecessary items.

    Empty the Trash Bin

Once you are done deleting unneeded files from your computer, don’t forget to empty the Trash Bin. To do so, right-click the Trash Bin icon on the Dock and afterward confirm to empty.

If you leave the deleted items sitting in the Trash Bin, the deletion of multiple large files will be unhelpful because as long as the files are still stored in the Trash Bin, they are taking up storage space.

    Use an Antivirus

An underperforming computer could be an issue caused by viruses and malware. Some people still believe that Macs are such safe computers with their Firewall that they don’t need additional protection.

The virtual world is continuously advancing, and so are the hackers that create viruses and malware. Thus you should invest in a proper antivirus for your Mac.

    Ensure a Cool Environment

If you own a MacBook, it is essential to ensure a cool environment for your computer because the optimal temperature to function properly is 10° and 35° C.

A hot environment will likely lead to an overheated computer, which will start underperforming. To avoid that from happening, choose a cooling pad to place under the laptop.

    Clean Dirt & Dust

Another factor that can cause your Mac to overheat and fans to make a loud noise is the dirt and dust inside your computer. To prevent that from happening, ensure a clean working environment and regularly clean the dust from your desk and computer.

If you already have the issue of dust and dirt covering the fans of your laptop, then you will have to take some time to clean the inside of your Mac.

    Use Activity Monitor

When you experience sudden drops in performance, this might mean that you have apps running in the background that use a significant amount of memory resources.

To discover which apps are slowing down your computer, open the Activity Monitor by clicking the magnifying glass from the top right corner and typing in “Activity Monitor.” Check the CPU tab and close the apps using the most CPU if you aren’t currently using them.

    Delete Browser Cache

If you notice that once you open your internet browser, it is slow and causes your Mac to underperform, you might either want to find an alternative for this web browser or clear the browser cache.

If you are using Safari, the default web browser for macOS, open the browser, click on the Develop option from the upper menu, and choose the Clear Cache option.
